The VCU College of Humanities and Sciences held its annual Faculty and Staff Appreciation and Retiree Awards Breakfast on April 18, 2019. One of the awardees was our own Interdisciplinary Science Program adviser, Sheila Blair, who received the 2019 CHS Excellence in Sciences Advising Award.

This award is presented to an individual who provides distinguished academic support to students, serves as an exemplary resource on academic matters and makes the success of their students a top priority. This person enthusiastically explores best practices in advising, manages their caseload (or equivalent) in a highly organized manner and fosters both academic and professional success in their students. A successful nominee exhibits trustworthiness, a focus on the success and wellbeing of their students, a strong sense of responsibility and exceptional organizational skills.

A recurring theme from faculty and staff supporting Blair’s nomination speaks towards her expertise and mastery of “the administrative/curriculum nuances of the Science program in a way that often takes advisers years to achieve.”

These sentiments are also reflected in the following sampling of comments from her advising students in the Interdisciplinary Science Program:

“The BEST advisor I have ever met. She has gone above and beyond to make my goals feel attainable. She has motivated me to continue my education.”
“Ms. Blair is awesome! She truly cares that you reach your academic goals in a fashion that suits your individual needs!”
“During my meeting with Mrs. Blair, she began the meeting with open ears to what my future plans are for the upcoming semester. With knowing all that I have been through from the tears from courses and a short-term leave from school, she recommended several options for me to get to my end goal with minor headaches. I truly appreciate all that she has done and said to assist me in graduating on time. Whenever I need to talk or assistances, Mrs. Blair is always available.”
